Why this category matters
The commercial case before the tooling.
Core concepts
The mental model you need to price and scope the work.
- Backblaze Margin ThresholdConcept
The Backblaze Margin Threshold framework helps agencies determine the minimum client fee needed to profitably resell Backblaze B2 storage. Given Backblaze's $6.95/TB/month standard rate and $15/TB/month for Overdrive, agencies must account for their own overhead, support, and margin targets. For example, an agency reselling 10TB of standard storage at $100/TB/month generates $1,000 revenue against $69.50 in Backblaze costs, yielding a 93% gross margin. However, Overdrive's multi-petabyte commitment and white-glove requirements make it viable only for enterprise clients, where the agency can charge a premium. The framework sets a floor: if the client fee falls below 2x the Backblaze cost, the agency risks negative margins after delivery and support hours. Agencies should use this threshold to price productized offers like the $299/mo SMB Cloud Backup, ensuring each retainer covers storage, setup, and monitoring.
- Egress GravityConcept
Egress Gravity is the pull a warehouse exerts on client data once reads, refreshes, and downstream dashboards depend on it. Storage price is the visible number; retrieval price is the gravity. An agency quoting a $0.02/GB storage rate can still hand a client a five-figure retrieval bill when a BI tool re-queries a multi-terabyte table daily. Flat-rate object storage changes the physics: Wasabi charges no egress or API request fees, and Backblaze B2 pairs free egress with white-label resale, so an agency can host client reporting under its own brand without metering every dashboard refresh. Storj pushes the same economics through a distributed node network with S3-compatible APIs. The framework matters at renewal: a client whose dashboards, exports, and AI agents all read from one warehouse faces real migration cost, and that cost is the agency's pricing power. Model egress before you model storage.
- Storage-Compute Decoupling ThresholdConcept
Storage-Compute Decoupling Threshold is the point where separating where data lives from where queries run costs less than keeping them together. Below the threshold, a single managed warehouse is simpler to run and easier to hand to a junior analyst. Above it, object storage priced without egress or API fees carries the bulk of the volume while a distributed SQL layer handles queries, and the savings compound as client datasets grow. The trade-off is operational: distributed SQL tuning, replication topology, and failover behavior become agency responsibilities rather than vendor ones. For agencies on retainer, that complexity is billable only if scoped as a platform line item, not absorbed into reporting hours. A practical signal is a client whose monthly storage bill exceeds the cost of one analyst day; at that point, moving cold tables to flat-rate object storage and keeping hot tables in a distributed SQL layer usually pays for the migration within a quarter.
Decision and risk
How to judge the fit, and the ways it goes wrong.
- When to Adopt Backblaze: Resell Only If You Can Commit to Multi-Petabyte or Annual ContractsEvaluation Rule
Adopt Backblaze only if you can resell to clients with multi-petabyte storage needs or annual contracts, and you're prepared to handle support and billing yourself.
- Data Warehousing Rule: Separate Storage From Compute Before You Quote A RetainerEvaluation Rule
Split the storage layer from the compute layer, price the storage at a flat rate, and only then choose the query engine that fits the client's concurrency profile.
- Backblaze: Buy vs Skip (White-Label Storage Resale)Decision Framework
IF your agency targets media, AI, or data-heavy clients needing S3-compatible storage and you can commit to multi-petabyte volumes, THEN B2 Overdrive at $15/TB/month with terabit-speed throughput justifies white-glove sales. IF you need predictable client pricing without egress surprises, THEN standard B2 at $6.95/TB/month with free egress up to 3x monthly storage supports a resale margin. IF your clients are small or you lack infrastructure expertise, THEN skip unless you can handle your own support and billing.
- The Backblaze B2 Overdrive Trap: Why Agencies Fail With Backblaze in High-Performance StorageFailure Pattern
- The Egress Trap: Why Data Warehousing Budgets Blow Up After Month ThreeFailure Pattern
- CockroachDB vs Wasabi vs Backblaze (Agency Data Warehouse Architecture Choices)Tool Comparison
These four services sit at different layers, so the honest comparison is not which one wins but which layer a client engagement actually needs. CockroachDB answers query and uptime requirements at a price and skill cost that object storage never carries, while Wasabi, Backblaze, and Storj compete on storage economics, egress terms, and how much of the stack an agency can put its own name on. Scope the client's reporting SLA first, then decide whether the warehouse layer is a managed SQL platform or an object store with a query engine bolted on top.

What agencies say about Backblaze
“WIndows 11 Restore fails with ERROR msg. Or does not fully populate your directories.”
SUCCESS! : I restored my crashed disk from Backblaze. CAVEATS: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. BackBlaze seemed great until I tried to restore directories. The restore function on Windows 11 fails with an error code that Backblaze support does not understand. The restore function of the Backblaze Windows App does not work. 1) Firstly, selecting a directory of sub-directories generates an error message, not a download. 2) Secondly, selecting the sub-directory alone, is not a work around, because not all the contents of the directory are restored. The sizes of the restored directories are smaller than the original directories. That is to say, not all the files that have been backed up are restored. I spent all day examining the restored directories in order to force Backblaze to download the files it skipped. That makes the Backblaze worse than useless, since you assume it is saving your files, but it is not. I now have no faith that the contents of the restored files are correct. Would you? ==================== New information (3 weeks later): Their Customer Service has been responsive, providing directions on how I can recover my data, usually within 36 hours of my email to them. However, they require a lot of work on my end before they help, to wit: I had to send them screen captures and Backblaze logs of the incident. PRO: On the upside, I did restore my lost data within a couple of weeks of my disk crash. SUCCESS!! MAYBE: I have downloaded 6.5TB. I have not checked to confirm that it is the data I lost, and not scrambled or random bits. CON: On the down side, I spent 2 weeks in reverse engineering and back & forth email to their customer support before a solution was identified. I feel that I did all the work, many hours of my time over 2 weeks.
